JYJ member Kim Junsu (Xiah Junsu) has announceed his extravagant rebirth as a musical star through the large-scale production ‘Tears of Heaven’.

Kim Junsu plays the role of Jun, a Korean soldier in Vietnam in the musical ‘Tears of Heaven’ which opened in the National Theater on the 1st. Through the role of the solider who falls in love with a Vietnamese woman Lin, Kim Junsu showcased charismatic singing and acting.

He has already debuted as a musical actor through the musical ‘Mozart!’ last year. With a caliber not usually found in rookies, Kim Junsu won two awards at The Musical Awards as well as the Rookie of the Year award at the Korea Musical Awards. Kim Junsu, who has proved his potential, has vowed to appear in at least one musical per year from now on. He decided upon ‘Tears of Heaven’ for his second production.

His slightly unstable and nervous acting at the beginning of the show stabilized as the show progressed. His witty and outstanding ad libs gave a new sense of joviality to Jun and Lin’s love. Though he still has minor areas to fix up and put the finishing touches on, he deserves high marks if you take into consideration that this is only his second musical.

Compared to his acting skills which were not extraordinary, his musical capabilities were beyond expectations. This only proved why he’s singled out as the idol singer with the greatest vocal talents. His sweet voice in the first act that sang of his love with Lin, and the husky singing style he used in the second act to express a painful parting, mesmerized the ears of audience members. He stood out immensely during his solos in ‘Do I have to say’ and ‘I had to learn’, both of which are the opening songs of the first and second acts respectively. He was able to draw applause from audience members from the start.

Kim Junsu’s ticket power is also something to be noted. All 15,000 seats of the first round of reservations for ‘Tears of Heaven’ were sold out in 5 minutes and 3,000 seats for the second round were sold out in 3 and a half minutes. Even the third round of reservations, which opened on the 31st last month, sold out in 2 minutes and 30 seconds. He’s shown a ticket power greater than that of Jo Seung Woo of ‘Jekyll and Hyde’. The string of sold out performances, which has never happened before in the musical industry, caused scalper tickets to reach prices of over 3 million Won, much to the dismay of Kim Junsu, who said that such a situation was “Unfortunate.”

JYJ’s Kim Jaejoong has recently become the center of attention when it was uncovered that he’s being considered for a role in the drama ‘HanBanDo’ with top actors like Jang Dong Gun and Ha Jiwon. According to a representative of JYJ, not only will Kim Jaejoong be acting this year, but Park Yoochun and Kim Junsu will also take a stab at acting as well.

First up is Kim Jaejoong, who is a strong candidate for the drama ‘HanBanDo’ and one who acted in the drama ‘Sunao Ni Narenakute’ with famous Japanese actors such as Eita and Ueno Juri. Having built his foundation through the movie and drama he has appeared in as an actor, Kim Jaejoong is a rising star full of potential who is catching the eyes of drama representatives. A JYJ spokesperson stated, “Jaejoong is getting many love calls from production companies who have been keeping an eye on him as he has been gaining more experience in acting,” and “Many scenarios have come in, for movies and for drams. He has been receiving great offers in the drama genre so he is carefully considering his options. There is a high possibility that he will greet viewers through a drama in the later half of this year.“

Park Yoochun, who successfully transformed into an actor through his role in the KBS drama ‘SungKyunKwan Scandal’ last year, is also planning to tackle a drama this year. The representative stated, “He has been receiving countless love calls after his role in ‘SungKyunKwan Scandal’,” and “As his first work was a historical drama, he is waiting for a new drama in which he can show a different kind of charm. Viewers will be able to see Yoochun in a drama, at the latest, in the second half of this year.”

Park Yoochun took the role of ‘Lee Seon Joon’ in the drama ‘SungKyunKwan Scandal’ and was praised for his acting, which was much more sophisticated than that of other rookies. As a result, he received three trophies at the 2010 KBS Drama Awards and proved his enormous potential as an actor.

Kim Junsu, who began performances for the musical ‘Tears of Heaven’ on February 1st, is planning to continue his remarkable activities on stage. The representative stated, “Though he is receiving offers for dramas and movies as well, Junsu wishes to and is planning on continuing his activities as a musical actor,” and “He has already proved his immense ticket power as well as his acting skills through various performances. Right now, his focus is to finish ‘Tears of Heaven’ well. He may greet audiences once more through a different musical in the second half of this year.”

Like so, JYJ are planning to be extremely active this year, branching out into the field of acting while continuing their careers as musicians. As all three have proved their potential, representatives of the industry believe that they will be as flawless as actors as they are as singers.

[NEWS] 101029 Various idols rated by their acting skills

Nowadays, it’s quite difficult to find a drama without an idol star in it. Thus a new term was coined: ‘actingdol’. Of course, idol stars are a good way to bring in decent ratings. However, these idols also are closely scrutinized and criticized for their lack of acting ability.

Sports Seoul gathered 3 Content Producers from the major broadcast channels in addition to various film industry representatives to determine which ‘actingdols’ were the best, according to acting ability, potential growth, and drama ratings. The males who came out on top were Lee Seung Gi and Micky Yoochun. Out of the females, Nam Gyuri did the best.

Through SBS ‘My Girlfriend is a Gumiho‘, Lee Seung Gi came out on top and got the highest rating for acting ability (4.2/5) . Yoochun’s debut drama was KBS2 ‘Sungkyunkwan Scandal’, where he managed a rating of ‘4′ for his first attempt at acting. Also, SBS ‘You’re Beautiful‘’s Lee Hongki (FT Island) received a rating of 3.4 while SBS ‘Oh My Lady‘’s Choi Siwon (Super Junior) received a 3.2 rating. Nam Gyuri was rated 3.4 for her role in SBS ‘Life is Beautiful’.

KBS CP Moon Bohyun, stated, “I like Micky Yoochun because he’s not a regular flower boy. Although he lacks in acting experience, one can still see his charisma as an actor.”

Across the board most of the people rated high for potential growth, but the opposite was true for Tara’s Jiyeon and Kim Hyun Joong. For MBC ‘Playful Kiss‘ Kim Hyun Joong received a mark of 4 in the category for drama ratings. However for potential growth he ranked behind both Choi Siwon and Nam Gyuri, with a 3.4 mark. Jiyeon placed the highest for drama ratings but the lowest for potential growth (2.7).

SBS CP Choi Moonseok commented, “Although I’m not sure about supporting roles, out of the current ‘actingdols’, there isn’t anyone with enough potential to become a leading lady. Performing on stage and being pretty is extremely different from being a good actress.”

Yoochun is starring in the KBS2 drama “SungKyunKwan Scandal.” People related to the drama gave their verdict, saying “This is definitely a good example of an idol turned actor”

Acting as the main character Lee Seon Joon, Yoochun is now doing activities both as a singer and an actor, and is working on a hard schedule. However, despite his idol background advantage, the way he has thrown himself into the production has raised voices of approval from the staff.

A person from the “SungKyunKwan Scandal’s” production team said , “For about three months before the shoot, Yoochun underwent intensive acting lessons, and crammed in the basics, and also had great enthusiasm in learning from the actual filming location. Even as we enter the final stages of the shoot, he is giving his all for each and every cut.”

The drama’s chief producer Gwak Ki Won said, “Yoochun took this on with a hardworking, honest attitude, and this led to him receiving a good assessment. His ability to focus is so great, to the extent that I think it would be good if he could be a full-fledged actor,” evaluating Yoochun. [NEWS] 100916 Professional critics rank the ‘Top 5 Best and Worst Idols’

Korean website 100Beat is receiving a lot of attention for their recent article on the “5 Best and Worst Idols over the past 10 years”, and we’re bringing it straight to you.

The hottest topic of the Korean music industry over the past few years has been none other than the ‘idol fever’ sweeping the market. With previous years being taken over by boy bands, the past 10 years of the music market have been dominated by both group and soloist idols.

Which idols are the best? Which idols are the worst? With the emergence of H.O.T as the initial marking point of the trend, five individual teams were chosen to compile entries for both the best and the worst categories.

Those that participated in the survey include 20 professional critics, such as music magazine editor-in-chiefs, journalists, and broadcast writers. All of them participated in a discussion meeting with ‘100 BEAT‘ in order to come up with the following list.

BoA has topped the list, having debuted 10 years ago at the age of 14. She’s become the model of detailed planning and success. Her agency created a system that worked positively in BoA’s case, making her first footsteps the standard planning of all subsequent idols. She was also one of the first female idols to blow away the image of being a ‘passive’ woman, making sexist phrases like, “The right and wrong of women are covered behind men,” a thing of the past.

SNSD, who is now regarded as a cultural phenomenon, has taken second. SNSD was able to make those that turned away from the TV screens return with anticipation for their next stunt. Kim Jungwee mentioned, “They’ve even made ‘rock kids’ be able to confidently say that they like idols.”

Big Bang was able to garner attention as well, considering they’re a fresh group and unlike any other idol before them; consequently they’ve gathered a strong fanbase (VIP’s). If SNSD possess the ‘uncle fans,’ Big Bang has the ‘older sister fans.’ One such older sister, Lee Hoyoung, commented, “Their strength lies in the fact that each individual member came together to make a harmonious team, despite having their own talents and interests. Not only that, but they are also strong on their own as well.”

And despite much time having been passed since the era of S.E.S, they are still remembered as ‘the’ model for girl groups, earning their place in fourth. Critic Kim Bonghyun stated, “S.E.S is one of the first idols that successfully accomplished both image and music.” Their competition with Fin.K.L showed the market the effects of competition between stars – much like how the competition between the Wonder Girls and SNSD opened doors for yet a newer generation of girl groups.

In the fifth spot is none other than TVXQ / DBSK. Choi Jisun elaborated on TVXQ’s ranking by stating, “TVXQ works in correspondence with the needs of each new generation. They’re an example of a successful entrance into the Japanese market and a group that has made the Hallyu wave something meaningful.”

Which place is the place where the South Korean stars have come from the most?

On Mnet ‘MCountdown MDC News’ they revealed where the recently known stars were born.

On the past 9th in the broadcast of MCD NEWS if you follow it, Busan is the place where most of the stars were born. Supreme Team’s Simon D, CNBlue’s Jung Yong Hwa, After School’s Lizzy but also 2NE1′s Sandara Park and MBLAQ’s Thunder who have grown up in the Philippines are also from Busan.

A lot of stars also came from Gwangjoo like Busan: DBSK’s U-Know Yunho, Big Bang’s Seungri, KARA’s Goo Hara, 2NE1′s Gong Minzy etc… Seungri was especially known in his place before debut for his dancing skills.

There are also eye catching stars in the Daegu and Jeonju place. In broadcasts there is 2PM’s Junsu and SHINee’s KEY who uses their hometown dialects and we can see that they are from the Jeonju province.

SNSD’s Taeyeon and Rainbow’s Noeul are also from the Jeonju province, they were friends since primary school.

Out of this, MBLAQ’s Mir is from Jeonnam Jangsung, DBSK’s Hero Jaejoong is from GongJu, Super Junior’s heechul who has an eye catching Western European appearance is from the Kangwondo province.

[NEWS] Micky’s Challenge: From Idol to Actor

Transforming from an idol to an actor can be tricky.

Not only does it require superb acting skills to wash away that idol image, but he or she must go through worries, criticism and also harsh self-discipline. Amid the numerous crossovers of young and determined stars, a particularly famous one is aiming to captivate viewers with his never-before-seen acting.

Dressed in “hanbok,’’ or traditional Korean clothes, TVXQ member Micky (real name Park Yoo-chun) looked proud, yet a bit nervous to represent his first–ever drama “Sungkyunkwan Scandal’’ at a press conference held at the W Hotel, northern Seoul, last week.

The doll-faced 24-year-old will appear as Lee Sun-jun in the period drama and work with fellow actors Park Min-young, Song Joong-ki and Yoo Ah-in.

The soap is a “campus romance drama,’’ according to the production company, and will bring Korean history, comedy and romance to the small screen.

Korean period dramas have not only been popular here, but also overseas, and they tend to have certain patterns: traditional dress, ancient Korean vernacular, love triangles, and the inner struggle between personal goals and traditional traits.

“Sungkyunkwan Scandal’’ is no different. The heroine Kim Yoon-hee, played by Park Min-young, has been responsible for her household after her father died and brother became ill in the busy times of the Joseon Kingdom (1392-1910). She decides that the only way for her to not worry about food and money is to disguise herself as a man and try for the state examination and become a court official.

She enters Sungkyunkwan, or a Confucian Academy, to study and meets fellow classmates: the strict and handsome Sun-jun, the playboy Koo Yong-ha (played by Song) and the rough and wild Moon Jae-shin (played by Yoo).

The journey begins as Kim, a pretty-faced student in disguise, struggles to fulfill her dream to become an official and hopefully discover true love along the way.

The biggest concern is not the familiar storyline or good looking stars dressed in colorful hanbok, but the acting. The four main actors are relatively young ― all are 24 except for the 25-year-old Song ― and have not made lasting impressions in their acting careers as yet. Additionally, period dramas are known to be especially tricky due to the old-fashioned dialect and behavior.

Despite these worries, the drama’s producer Kim Won-suk expressed his confidence in working with the young actors, especially Park Yoo-chun.

“Park was already on the team when I decided to helm the drama. But if I had the chance to pick the actors again, I would have picked him. I know many people are looking forward to, and are also worried about his acting, but I can tell you all that he is doing great,’’ Kim said.

Park also had to deal with the interest and pressure put on him, though he did a pretty good job in keeping a straight face and calmly answering questions regarding his lack of acting experience.

“Of course, being my first work and all, I thought about my acting a lot. I think this was a chance where I discovered a new me. The staff were generous enough to pick me for the role,’’ he said smiling.

“I have been dancing for a long time, and I had a pretty tough time realizing that the martial arts sequences were not to be shown as choreography. I have been immersed in the drama and although it’s been tough with the weather and the bugs, it’s been fun,’’ Park added.

It was hard not to notice the enormous interest showering the star. Even the press conference was a bit overdone. The event seemed to have lost its true purpose and turned into a promotional circus. It included two fashion shows; one by 2009, 2010 Miss Korea contestants and models and another by the actors themselves. The hanbok display was, indeed colorful and beautiful, but there was nothing different from those seen in previous and even current historical series.

A preview screening is one of the most important channels that uncovers the gist of the drama and also help the press understand the storyline easier and faster. The 8-minute highlight video was not enough to bring out the overall vibe of the work. It took an hour and a half to finally bring out the actors and producer to the table for a Q and A session.

Micky was introduced as “Park Yoo-chun’’ from start to finish, probably because he really wants to turn over a new leaf. The TVXQ member may have found it interesting to discover the actor within, but it will take a bit more than generosity and soul searching to spearhead a full-length drama, especially when all eyes are on him. Will he be able to shine in the spotlight? Fans will find out on Aug. 30 at 9:55 p.m.

[NEWS] K-pop idol Micky flies solo in drama

Torn and bruised by a series of events involving a legal battle with his agency, K-pop idol Micky ― one-fifth of the near-disbanded boy band TVXQ ― put in a confident if somewhat close-mouthed press appearance for his major acting debut in KBS’ “Seonggyungwan Scandal” on Tuesday.

“Who wouldn’t feel pressure when starting something new?” Micky, a.k.a. Park Yoo-chun, said fielding comparisons between him and other TVXQ chums that have been making the pop idol-acting crossover.

Park, Hero and Xiah filed a lawsuit against S.M. Entertainment over their 13-year contract last July, but the court’s ruling in partial favor of the trio turned out to be little more than the calm before the storm for the boy wonder.

In April, S.M. filed a court objection to the trio’s injunction and in July slapped a suit on the head of a cosmetics company that the three members had invested in. The latter was in response to a defamation suit filed by the company against S.M.’s CEO. S.M. was cleared of all charges in May.

To add insult to injury, Park’s manager was accused of assault in late July.

Unfazed, it seems, by the brouhaha, Park jumped on board as the lead for the upcoming period piece; a move that will either prove fortuitous or rash.

TVXQ leader U-Know’s small screen debut in MBC’s “No Limit” crashed and burned, bringing in abysmal ratings; not a good harbinger for Park and for member Max who awaits his fate with the drama “Paradise Ranch.” Meanwhile, member Xiah took a safer route through the musical “Mozart!” and Hero pulled off an award-winning performance in a Japanese drama.

Park’s paltry acting experience (primarily through variety show skits and a boy band-pushing TV drama film) will most likely cast doubt on his ability to pull off this hefty role. Both director Kim Won-seok and co-star Song Joong-ki, however, expressed their faith in Park.

“He has a good voice for acting and is attractive-looking,” said Kim, who cemented Park’s reputation as a budding action star by announcing that Park had level three taekwondo skills and that he “hardly used a stunt double.”

Kim then said: “He will surprise you with his slapstick comedy. He is good.”

“I cannot say that I didn’t have prejudices about idols or singers who act, (Park) included,” said co-star Song. “(But) he really tries hard. It is touching.”

Will Park’s efforts pay off?

There is no guarantee that Park will produce a persuasive portrayal of the conceited, self-indulgent, blue blood Joseon Dynasty scholar Lee Seon-joon; especially when the singer admits that he himself lacks the anal tendencies of his character.

“My personality is somewhat open and free,” the 24-year old said. “But the hidden sense of pressure (my character feels) is similar. I can relate to that.”

His ability to tune into the darker side of Lee could add depth to the romantic, gender-bender series.

Based on a novel, “Seonggyungwan Scandal” ― as its name suggests ― unfolds at the Joseon Dynasty’s premier educational institution, Seonggyungwan.

Believed to be established during the Goryeo Dynasty as Gukjagam in 992, the institute was re-christened Seonggyungwan in the early 1300s.

There the male progeny of high-ranking officials and aristocrats prepared for the state examination “gwageo” and were trained for government service work. Alumni include famed scholar Yi Hwang (1501-1570), a.k.a. Toegye whose face currently decorates the 1,000 won note.

The drama, however, exhibits no pedantic pretensions.

The school, in essence, serves as a vehicle for a “Twelfth Night”-esque plotline, where a ballsy female (played by “Princess Ja-Myung” actress Park Min-young) masquerades as a man to enter Seonggyungwan in her sickly brother’s stead. There she encounters fellow student Lee Seon-joon (Park Yoo-chun) and a romance blossoms.

The male-only school backdrop also allowed for the inclusion of a bevy of good-looking actors, providing plenty of eye candy for female viewers.

“Seonggyungwan Scandal,” however, promises to be more than just a frilly, one-note rom-com.

“The piece will bring out the romance, the melodrama and the slight raciness of the tale while also highlighting how these youngsters perceive society and how they mature,” said director Kim, assuring the press that the series would dramatize actual aspects of the Joseon Dynasty institute.

In the meantime, cast and staff members can benefit from Park Yoo-chun’s loyal fans. According to co-star Park Min-young, hundreds of fans visit the set three times a week, bringing hoards of food for everyone.

“I feel very grateful,” she said.

“Seonggyungwan Scandal” airs on Aug. 30 at 9:55 p.m. on KBS 2 TV.

If idol groups Big Bang and DBSK got into a fight, who would win?

The explosive competition between Korean idol groups Big Bang and DBSK will unfold on an episode of CableTV tvN ‘ENews Weekly - Shocking Win’ set to air on the 6th.

In the first half, where the two groups will face off based on their qualifications as idols, they will be judged for their fashion sense as trendsetting idol groups amongst other things.

In particular, there will not only be a broadcast of a sales comparison between DBSK’s ‘Mirotic’ and Big Bang’s ‘Haru Haru,’ but there will also be coverage of each idol group’s private dorms.

The winner of the competition between idol groups Big Bang and DBSK will be revealed on ‘ENews Weekly - Shocking Win’ on August 6th at 9pm.

[SungKyunKwan Scandal] is based on Jung Eun Gweol’s novel [The Lives of Sungkyunkwan Confucian Scholars]. The story revolves around Kim Yoohui, who cross-dresses as a man to enter SungKyunKwan on behalf of her sickly brother, and encounters Lee Seon Joon, Moon Jae Shin and Yu Yong Ha. It is a story about friendship and love that takes place in a school setting during the Joseon Dynasty.


Aside from Micky Yoochun, other young stars acting in the drama include Song Joong Gi, Yoo Ah-In, Park Min Young and Han Yeon.

“Mischievous Kiss” is adapted from the Japanese manga of the same name and this drama has been dubbed the “second Boys Over Flowers”. Besides Kim Hyunjoong, other stars have recently been casted.

In this acting battle between the greatest idol stars, everyone is waiting to see what kind of work they will produce.
