[NEWS] 110215 Broadway expert lauds Korean talents as ‘exceptional’ on world stage

A veteran U.S. musical director has said Seoul’s musical scene boasts a many more talented musical actors than Broadway but lacks the time necessary to perfect technical elements to make the product more sophisticated.

Robert Johanson is in Seoul to direct the musical “Monte Cristo” for the second consecutive year. The show is to run from March 1 at the Chungmu Art Center with local musical stars Ryu Jung-han, Um Ki-joon and Shin Song-rok triple-cast in the lead role.

“In terms of talent, it’s exceptional. That’s why we could do a triple cast. In many shows in America, I couldn’t find three leads to triple cast that would be equally good,” said Johanson in an interview with The Korea Herald.

“I’ve noticed that a lot of people in China and Japan come here to see musicals in Korea because the best singers are in Seoul,” he said.

However, Korean musicals need much more development time, especially for the creative team to fine-tune technical work during rehearsals at theaters to further refine the product, he said.

Robert Johanson, director of musical “Monte Cristo,” poses during an interview in Seoul on Jan. 19. (Park Hae-mook/The Korea Herald)

“You can get much more spectacular shows in New York because they can spend six months in the theater before they open. Here, we spend six days,” the 59-year-old said.

“There’s only a certain amount of work in a certain amount of time and there’s no playing around here.”

Of course, the performance and the story are more important than the technical work but “a little bit more sophistication” comes if you do it, he added.

Johanson supported the idea of giving K-pop idols the chance to debut as musical actors, while some critics say the immaturity and insincere attitudes of idol stars could spoil the atmosphere.

He took an example of Kim Jun-su of boy band JYJ who did an excellent job with the musical “Mozart” last year. Johanson said Kim did not know much about the musical at the first rehearsal, but had learned really fast. Whether everybody else will make the journey in the same way that he did, however, is questionable, he said.

“It’s a case-by-case thing. If they do one or two shows and they don’t get it, then they don’t get it. Give me them a chance to grow a little bit,” he said.

Born in 1951 in Delaware, Johanson started directing when he was 11. He used to gather 35 kids in a show and put it on for the whole school every year.

He went to Ithaca College, an art school famous for music and drama courses, and then went straight to New York to get into a Broadway show.

Since taking his first full time job as a director aged 25, Johanson has directed over 250 musicals and plays in New York and around the world in the last 35 years.

Johanson was the artistic director of the Paper Mill Playhouse for more than 20 years until 2002 and he has been working as a freelance director since.

He started directing Korean musicals because he wanted to keep doing new shows, rather than repeating what he had done before.

“There aren’t many strong opportunities in the U.S. because people are nervous about the economy, so they’re doing the shows that everybody knows,” he said.

Musical “Monte Cristo” is based on the novel “The Count of Monte Cristo” and the music was composed by Frank Wildhorn.

Although it was premiered in Switzerland with different production and creative teams in 2009, the Korean version is unique, Johanson said.

The successful showcase of “Monte Cristo” at the Universal Arts Center last year led to an upgrade for the second show at the larger Chungmu Art Hall’s Grand Theater, which is better equipped for the musical.

“People who have seen the first show will see all kinds of small changes throughout. We’re fine-tuning everything for perfection,” he said.

Musical “Monte Cristo” runs from March 1 through April 24 at the Chungmu Art Hall’s Grand Theater. Tickets range from 50,000 won to 120,000 won. For details, visit www.musicalmonte.com.

[NEWS] 100906 Korean Boy Bands, Anime: Saving Japan’s Music Biz?

It’s not easy trying to make money in Japan’s music industry. For years now, much of the revenue from higher-margin CD sales has been robbed by the bursting growth of digital music downloads and pirates.

Avex shares registered a fresh 2010 high on Thursday and shares are up 64% year-to-date versus a 12% decline in the broader Nikkei Stock Average.

The reasons are even more intriguing: a boost in CD and DVD sales linked to mega-hit animated series “One Piece” and the hugely popular South Korean boy band Tong Vfang Xien Qi, known better in Japan as Tohoshinki.

Earlier this year, the five-member South Korean pop group, which made a debut here in 2005, devastated fans with an announcement that it would cease group activities in Japan and focus on solo work. Fortunately for Avex, that sparked sales of a Tohoshinki greatest hits album and solo singles.

“I have to admit this bad luck has also brought us good luck,” said Avex spokesperson Taishi Arashida. “These guys are clearly beyond the conventional South Korean boom.”

Beyond the Tohoshinki and One Piece phenomena, market experts say there is also a longer-term cause for optimism in Avex’s earnings: new sources of revenue. Tomoaki Kawasaki, an analyst at Cosmo Securities, said many investors expect the company to also raise its full-year earnings outlook soon on faster-than-expected growth in subscriptions to “BeeTV” — a paid-for service launched in May 2009, owned 70% by Avex and 30% by NTT Docomo Inc., that produces and broadcasts content for mobile phone users.

The number of users has reached over 1.4 million subscribers from just 440,000 in June last year, well ahead of the company’s 1.5 million target by March 2011. Okasan Securities projects the BeeTV business to turn profitable on an operating basis as early as by the next fiscal year.

That’s good news for Avex, because it has been particularly successful in luring female consumers in their twenties to BeeTV drama contents featuring their favorite actors and screenwriters, while also diversifying its contents to meet the needs of different age groups.

“The industry faces difficult market conditions, but it boils down to whether each music company can deliver strong content,” Cosmo Securities’ Kawasaki said.

And whether that content derives from South Korea, animation or mobile phones, it looks like Avex is on the winning side, at least for now.

[NEWS] 100813 Court invalidates ‘slave-like contract’ for entertainers

The Supreme Court upheld a ruling that long-term contracts between entertainers and their agencies are unfair and therefore invalid.

The top court Friday invalidated a contract putting an entertainer under the control of his agency for as long as a decade, saying the contract restricted freedom.

This verdict is expected to put the brakes on entertainment agencies’ long-established practice of controlling its stars for as long as possible with slave-like contracts.

Woo Sung-hyun, a 20-year-old member of popular boy band U-Kiss, filed a suit in 2008 challenging his contract, calling it “unfair.”
In 2006, Woo signed with the agency, Ssing Entertainment, a 10-year contract that stipulated if his performances were suspended due to health problems or mandatory military service, the inactive period would be added to the term.

Any acts violating the terms cost the singer a financial penalty three times the agency’s investment in him, according to the contract.

A district court ruled in favor of Woo, saying, “The first ten years after his debut album constitute virtually his entire life as a singer. Given the nature of the industry, the contract term is unfair and excessively infringes upon his rights.”

An appellate court upheld the decision.

Such excessively binding contracts in the showbiz industry came to light when three members of the popular boy band TVXQ filed a suit against its agency, SM Entertainment, to invalidate what they called “life-long slave contracts.”

The three ㅡ Micky, Xiah and Hero ㅡ claimed their agency prohibited their freedom as artists by forcing them to follow the agency’s demands to appear at certain performances and broadcasts for 13 years. The litigation is still underway.

The dispute led to the country’s fair trade watchdog drawing up guidelines for entertainer-agency contracts, which set the maximum length at seven years. They also ban an agency’s excessive intervention into employees’ private lives.

[TRANS] 100706 The “Kimura Takuya of Korea” – Stars Who Can Sing, Dance & Act Successively Land In Japan

There is a saying that all popular Korean actors are “good singers”. In Korea, Yoon Sang-Hyun is also one of those stars, with his daily TV drama [My Wife Is Superwoman], that made a big hit, breaking records of over 30% viewership ratings.

Hailed as the “Kimura Takuya of Korea” because of his looks, Yoon Sang-Hyun, who was also an aspiring singer from the start, sang the song [Never Ending Story] in the same drama, charming viewers with his impressive vocal talent. On the day it was released in Korea, it became the number one topic on various music charts.

Following that, in March this year, he made his long-desired debut as a singer in Japan with the cover of Yasushi Nakanishi’s song [最後の雨] (t/n: Saigo no Ame/LAST RAIN). He also released his second single [誓い] (t/n: Chikai/Oath) recently, gaining further momentum as a singer. Besides Sang-Hyun, a lot of actors sing OSTs for dramas, sing songs that they are proud of to the fans that attend fansign events in Japan, and it seems like being good at singing is becoming one of the prerequisites to become a popular actor.

Also, as opposed to “actors who are good at singing” like Sang-Hyun, the Korean entertainment industry is growing such that there is an increase in “singers who can act”. Recently, KPOP artists have been advancing in Japan in succession and there have been many singers who pursue their acting careers concurrently with their singing careers. Tohoshinki’s Jejung acted in the Japanese drama 「素直になれなくて」 (t/n: Sunao ni narenakute/Hard to say I love you) (Fuji TV) and the drama [No Limit~地面にヘディング~] (t/n: No Limit~Jimen ni hedingu~/No Limit~Heading to the ground), in which Yunho starred as the lead actor, achieved #1 on the Oricon DVD Ranking for dramas.

BIGBANG’s T.O.P was also selected as the main cast for the drama [IRIS] (TBS) and the movie [Into the fire], which is currently airing. Also, from FTIsland, who made their major debut in Japan in May, Lee Hongki’s [You're Beautiful], SS501′s Kim Hyunjoong’s [花より男子~Boys Over Flowers] (t/n: Hana yori dango); from SNSD, who will make their Japanese debut in August, Yoona’s [You're My Destiny] and [Cinderella Man]; all of these became hits.

They can sing, dance and even act. The advancement of such talented Korean stars is unstoppable. [Try Works]
